Can The Lord of the Rings Ever be Remastered?
After several home releases, The Lord of the Rings doesn't look as good as I remember, but my memory isn't the problem.
My recommendations:
-
The Fellowship of the Ring:
1. The Fan Version.
From what I understand, the Fan Version uses the luminance of the HD Extended Edition, but is color matched to the Theatrical Edition and the Extended DVDs. I love it. I found it on 1337x.to.
2. The HD Theatrical Edition (2010)
If you don’t care about the Extended Edition, this is a great option. It has some DNR, but the colors look good.
3. The 4K (2020)
The 4Ks are fine, but out of all of them, Fellowship is the worst, because the colors are so boring.
4. The DVDs?
I don’t know, anything but the HD Extended Edition.
5. The HD Extended Edition (2011)
Abysmal.
-
The Two Towers:
1. The HD Extended Edition (2011)
The Two Towers and The Return of the King weren’t messed up, so I prefer the HD Blu-rays over the 4Ks. However, the Extended Edition of The Two Towers has a slight green tint in *some* scenes, compared to the Theatrical Edition, but it’s not that noticeable.
2. The 4K (2020)
Arguably, The Two Towers benefits the most from a fancy new color grade, since the original was a little flat. I love how blue the skies are in this version. Unfortunately, the DNR looks the worst. The plains of Rohan are wiped out. There are like ten different flashbacks, so the white filter bugs me. And anything that’s yellow-green is too saturated, so certain costume details look like caution-tape, and anyone with blonde hair looks like they’ve been swimming in chlorine.
-
The Return of the King:
1. The HD Extended Edition (2011)
Perfect.
Although, I had audio-sync problems with The Two Towers and the Return of the King, so personally, I swapped the audio with the 4K audio.
2. The 4K (2020)
The Return of the King 4K doesn’t bother me that much. But I prefer the HD version.

The funny thing is how he claims he did this DNR/EE stuff to try to make LOTR look more like The Hobbit, yet he APPLIED THE SAME EFFECTS TO THE HOBBIT! This actually makes me wonder if these things were done further down the pipeline. The new remastered Blu-rays don't appear to have these issues, so it seems as if this is applied during the 2K -> 4K upscaling process. Peter Jackson may have been supervising the 2K HDR master, not the final upscale.

I had to comment, I recently watched the Trilogy in the Cinema (Uk Based), And when watching the Fellowship I thought it had a strange grainy, “bad quality” appearance to it. I didn’t think much of it - until the second and third started and the detail was so much more crisp Edit: Oh, and in the Prologue the scene with Ian Holme finding the ring was totally missing. Martin Freeman wasn’t even included

Very interesting, thank you! I'm not that invested in the trilogy but I very much get these frustrations - my heart sinks every time a 4k restoration of a classic movie is released any someone thought it a good idea to give it a greenish, blueish or yellowish tint. And you'd think if any movie warranted the pains of going through a complete rescan of the original elements, it would be this - very much alive! - franchise. How come this was too much work but Paramount did it for, uhm, 'Star Trek the Motion Picture' and even re-rendered the CGI?

This is what got me away from buying movies on discs. You do it over and over again for a better version but each time another flaw is brought in. Or may i correct me, i stopped buying because of the simple upscales from DVD in the beginning of BluRays. Then you had to buy the better rescan and then the directors cut or the one with the fixed colors or sound and so on. No thanks.

I'm in the minority and I get that, but I prefer the original cut of the films. Secondly, I just went to see the three films in theater this June after not having seen the films in many, many years, and I was so disgusted by the digital effects and some of the footage. It looked so plastic-y. It made me sad because all my life I have thought that LOTR has some of the best VFX that still pay off really well 20 years later, but then it looked so bad.

They did make both the Hobbit and LotR look like they were filmed at the same time. I know people don't like the Hobbit, but I do think it is part of the larger story. So I get the rationale behind it. That said I also can see the point you made in the video where the way these films were shot kind of gave them a each their own kind of aesthetic and look. I don't hate the Hobbit. And I felt the Hobbit's style/tone actually worked for it because the Hobbit was written for Tolkien's children so it benefitted from the more saturated tones, etc. I wouldn't have noticed a lot of the finer details you pointed out in my watching of it. It's like you said when it's in motion you don't tend to pick up on it. As far as the DNR? I don't think it's as bad here as it is in other stuff. I do think film grain like DNR can either enhance or distract. Depends on the film really. Raiders of the Lost Ark on 4k was 'reportedly' based on fresh scans of the original camera negatives. I do think DNR was used to an extent in the 4k re-releases of Indy, but I don't think that it was ultimately detrimental. There is still grain there. I am glad they fixed the green grading of the blu-rays. I do think that there is a risk any director takes in constantly going back to rework their past work. George Lucas's Star Wars has been meddled with so much you can't reliably even watch the film as it was originally shown in theaters. As far as remasters go? Outside of fan edits the 4k releases are probably the best we can hope for outside of a new release for a new format. But does that then mean there are further "enhancements" or more "tinkering." I do think that there was a lot of work Jackson and his team had done. But you are talking about a grand total of 6 films each with a runtime of about 3 hours. It may not even be Jackson. But it could be WB once again cutting corners/costs. You only need to look at other WB efforts. The Superman 4k collection has some really heavy grain. And color can fluctuate. But you only need to look at WB's release of the LotR Ultimate Collection. They put all 6 films on 31 discs, with some art cards and a booklet and some fancy cardboard packaging for a whopping price tag of $250. If you want fancy packaging a person should just opt for the steelbook sets. That said the only "Special features" you had in this so called ultimate edition was the alamo draft house reunion hosted by Stephen Colbert and a Cannes film presentation reel. There were no appendices or any of the previously released special features. So I would be willing to say that WB went "cheap" for the 4k remasters. I again don't know if I would put all the blame on Jackson. It is kind of the nature of the beast sadly. A passionate fan with nothing but time and passion is likely always going to be able to spend more time to get something looking just right versus a large corporation who is just looking to make more money. I'd also give the example of the restoration of Bud Abbott and Costello Show season 2 by 3D Film Archive. These guys are independent and the restoration of the original film reels is nothing short of amazing. (I recommend giving it a look if you like old comedy). Great video though with well reasoned/articulated points!

A main issue for me is that the first three seasons have the Jim-Pam romance as pretty much the main and only storyline and it was the most interesting and part of the show. When they ended up getting together that storyline ended and from season 4 onward if kinda just started getting boring. And the last season for me was just awful. They got new writers for the last season and it just did not work. New Dwight is unfunny and New Jim was kinda interesting but the shows literally just doing Jim’s story all over again because the writers clearly couldn’t think of anything more original. And the assassination of Andy’s character will never be forgiven for me.

I had spent more time watching the HD version of the extended edition online before I noticed the green tint problem. im late as hell to the party, my apologies, but the lion king is like one of my favorite films ever? it was my first major interest as a child and influenced me a lot. we had dvds with extras and shit and i would watch them so much theyd scratch. i occassionally rewatch it, and whenever my mom's friends come around and they happen to have kids, its the first film i think to put on for them to watch. pass the brainworm, yknow the stampede scene has always stuck with me in every way. from the score, to the animation, to the emotional impact its left on us all. and having seen it as many times as i have, youd think id get over it. NUH UH even to this day i get goosebumps. my blood literally runs cold thanks to that dolly shot. the execution was perfect, and honestly the best way to have done it, that i cannot even think of any live action examples that fill me with as much dread as that exact shot brings me. perhaps its just because it was a huge interest, but no matter how many times i watch it, or hell even just think about the score, my whole body reacts thats just how good that shot is

The movie was about a yr put from iron man, so nobody was paying for comic book movies like this. It's 2 3/4 hrs. Let's add slo mo? Let's add an entire secondary storyline for meta commentary? Let's add another level of meta commentary with comic book characters acknowledging they're comic book characters? You're looking at 6-7 hrs of movie that nobody would've ever invested in. This is really disappointing and frustrating. I got the 4K Extended films because my family watches the every year - it's become a New Year's tradition. When we watched the 4K versions, I loved the detail, but I noticed that some things were very off with the color. Especially, everyone from Rohan with blonde hair at Helm's Deep had a greenish tint to their hair. I thought ti might be due to my screen, which is a 43" 4K monitor, but tweaking the monitor settings, I couldn't really fix the greenish-looking hair. Some other scenes didn't look right but I didn't really study them hard enough to figure out what was wrong, I just knew that things didn't look right. From this documentary I learned that Jackson may have screwed up the colors deliberately to match the grading of scenes in The Hobbit, and I'm horrified! We don't use the H-word in this house - those movies are atrocious. This is like restoring Star Trek, and altering everything to match the animated series... or George Lucas altering the original Star Wars. Thank G-d _that_ would never happen 😠 We'll probably watch the extended edition DVDs again next New Year's and leave it at that. If they ever do release a decent 4K edition, am I gonna have to buy the White Album yet again?

This 3rd Part is weird, it’s a different type of Analysis, the first two parts were purely about the Show, now you’re trying everything you can to make the show look as bad as possible, not because the show is actually bad, but because you don’t like some of the usual House jokes, which you sympathized with in the first two parts. This Analysis turned from good to extremely bad the moment you started voicing things that are both stupid and untrue. Hopefully, you go back to an actual Analysis of the Show in the rest of this. (Also, the moment you started talking about any type of trans stuff was the moment you completely went off course and just started saying the most random and coincidental stuff, while also including some truth so that you can make your personal, biased Opinions of 2021/2022 sound like real Facts and not just delusional stuff)

These films deserve a full rescan of all the 35mm footage. To throw it into Topaz and just upscale the footage is beyond lazy, even with taking out the CGI and upscaling it separately. Only way to get a truly Native 4k print is to scan the negatives. Truly embarrassing stuff.

a video was not needed to answer this question, it's simple.. yes it can get remade, should it get remade? thats another question... for the most part, no, it should not get remade, but there is one way it could get remade, and that is properly, instead of 3 movies, it should be six, peter jackson messed up alot of important character development and even veto'd whole parts of the story, messed around witht he pacing and ordering and if you ever read the books, you will realise, peter jacksons trilogy, is, terrible!

I subscribed because of the commitment to house then i immediately unsubscribed watching this because of the 2000s hate and thinking his jokes are offensive lol
